Isopropyl Alcohol: Isopropyl alcohol, also known as isopropanol or n-propanol or dimethyl carbinol, is a clear and flammable liquid with a strong alcoholic smell. It is the simplest form of a secondary alcohol, where the carbon atom of the alcohol is connected to two other carbon atoms. Its chemical formula is C3H8O. Isopropyl alcohol can dissolve in water, alcohol, ether, acetone, benzene, and chloroform. It cannot dissolve in salt solutions. This alcohol is produced by indirectly hydrating propylene (CH2CHCH3). It is widely used in the production of various industrial and household chemicals, and it is a common ingredient in antiseptics, disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and detergents. Isopropyl alcohol is particularly popular in pharmaceutical applications due to its low toxicity. Some isopropyl alcohol is also used as a chemical intermediate. It serves as an industrial solvent and can be applied to the skin as a rubbing alcohol. Unlike ethanol, isopropyl alcohol is not regulated or taxed by the U.S. government, and it has a lesser drying effect on the skin, even though it is more toxic. We have different grades of Isopropyl alcohol for different applications.
