Alcohols: An Alcohol is an organic compound that carries at least one hydroxyl (−OH) functional group bound to a saturated carbon atom. Because OH is the functional group of all alcohols, we often represent alcohols by the general formula ROH, where R is an alkyl group. There are three types of alcohol. Alcohols are classified as primary, secondary or tertiary alcohols. Alcohols range from the simple, like methanol and ethanol, to complex, like sucrose and cholesterol. Most alcohols are colorless liquids or solids at room temperature. Alcohols of low molecular weight are highly soluble in water; with increasing molecular weight, they become less soluble in water, and their boiling points, vapor pressures, densities, and viscosities increase. These are utilized in the form of sweeteners, preparation of perfumes, and sometimes in the process of synthesizing other compounds, wherein some others are abundantly manufactured in organic chemicals coming in various industries.
