This is a big discovery in the world of oxidation chemistry, as scientists have proved that there exists a short-lived molecule that scientists have long been theorizing about. A research team at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and Kinetic Chemistry Research in the United States found it and published the finding in the journal Science Advances.
This molecule, the oxygen-rich tetroxide, was first predicted to exist in the 1950s during the oxidation process, the Russell mechanism. Scientists assumed that it was formed shortly after two organic radicals interacted with each other and formed a molecule consisting of four oxygen atoms bonded together. Nevertheless, due to tetroxides rapidly disappearing, no direct observation had become a possibility in the past.
The research team observed tetroxides first under an advanced mass-spectrometric method that has the ability of detecting extremely unstable molecules without destroying them. The findings indicated that these molecules were, in fact, able to exist short-term under normal air temperature and room temperature conditions- something that had not been proved before in laboratory experimentation.
These results are significant since oxidation reactions are an important component of numerous natural and industrial reactions. It is believed that the appearance of Tetroxides occurs during fires, candle flames, and car engines, among other processes of combustion. They can also be created in the atmosphere of the Earth and even in the bodies of living things.
Scientists discovered that tetroxides are only available between 0.2 and 200 milliseconds, but even this is not long in the world, as tetroxides are capable of affecting chemical reactions. Their existence might have an impact on the nature of the behavior of pollutants such as smoke or solvents in the air and on the formation of selected oxidation products.
Biomedical research can also be a beneficiary of the discovery. Knowledge of tetroxide reactions may enhance investigations into oxidative stress and aid in the creation of new methods of cancer therapies.
