Phenol Red sodium salt is a water soluble pH indicator used in the 6.8 (yellow) to 8.2 (red) range. It is commonly employed in cell biology laboratories as a cell tissue culture pH marker. Under normal conditions, phenol red added to the growth medium will have a pink-red color. Usually 15 mg/l is used to produce this effect. If problems arise, such as dying cells or overgrowth of contaminants, this will cause a change in pH resulting in a change in indicator color. This color change is an indication that the medium needs to be replaced. Additionally, Phenol Red could potentially be useful as a differentiation factor.
